Festival Films: Opening Night - Life in Stills

A valiant 96-year-old woman, Miriam Weissenstein, fights real estate developers in Life in Stills to keep alive the Photo House in Tel Aviv, which holds 1 million negatives documenting the history of Israel. Stubborn and opinionated, Weissenstein is also enormously funny, even when bickering with her beloved gay grandson, Ben, who is helping her save her shop. 2012 Ophir (Israeli Oscar) winner! Special guests: Director Tamar Tal and film subject Ben Peter. In Hebrew, English and German with subtitles.

Veteran's Day double header: 804/Ameer Got His Gun

Get two films for the price of one.

May 1948. With independence declared, Israel was immediately under siege from six armies. Outnumbered and out-armed, Israel asked for international help. The documentary 804 tells the little-known story of the 804 South Africans in The Machal, volunteers from outside of Israel.

Ameer Abu-Ria is not your typical Israel Defense Forces member in the documentary Ameer Got His Gun. He’s a Muslim Arab who volunteers to serve in the military. Regarded as a traitor by many Arab citizens and an enemy by many Israeli Jews, Ameer remains a total optimist: smart, gregarious, a friend to all he meets in the army.

We Are Not Alone

Eddie, a security guard at a shopping mall, keeps his distance and has limited friendships as he prepares for the end of the world in the Israeli film We Are Not Alone. Then he meets May, a down-and-out fellow loner with a dubious past, who is squatting at the mall. This quirky, endearing love story stars Ohad Knoller (Srugim, Yossi and Jagger). Directorial debut of Lior Har-Lev. Note: brief nude scenes. In Hebrew with subtitles.

The depends whether you're Anna, an idealistic military police interrogator, or her tough-guy commander boss, accused of brutality against a Palestinian, or a morally-conflicted whistle blower in the Israeli film Room 514. Fans of Hollywood's A Few Good Men (1992) will be excited to see this Israeli counterpart. 2012 Ophir (Israeli Oscar) Best Actress nominee. Special guest: Director Sharon Bar-Ziv. A charming, Jewish, poker-loving, divorced father of two, lies - often - to get through life. The day he gets a vasectomy is the day he reconnects with an ex-flame in this delightful romantic comedy. Directed by Daniel Burman (Family Law, 2006 Festival, Lost Embrace, 2004 Festival) and starring Norma Aleandro (Anita) with an acting debut from Jorge Drexler, Latino singing star. In Spanish with subtitles.

Melting Away

When Assaf’s parents discover women’s clothing under his mattress in the Israeli film Melting Away, the teen is forced to move out. Assaf becomes a woman, Anna, singing at gay bars in Tel Aviv at night and pretending to be a nurse by day. Anna’s mother searches for her “son” after her husband is diagnosed with terminal cancer in this tender, fulfilling story. In Hebrew with English subtitles.

A Gala thank you!

A big thank you to all who came and supported Bedazzled & Betrothed, our annual Gala, last Saturday. We had a great night of fun, food and film, while honoring actress Annette Miller, restaurateur Jim Solomon and Boston Jewish Film Festival Board President Joyce Pastor. Director Doug Block showed his work-in-progress 112 Weddings. The night was a great kick-off to The Festival.
